Low Carb & Exercise Pages

This web site exists solely to be an source of information about the lowcarb diet and exercise mail list. This mail list has existed since November 1996. Its domain name has changed from mtjeff.com to solid.net to low-carb.org during that period. However, the name changes occurred without any real change in location.

A mail list is not a BBS, it's not a newsgroup, it's not a forum, it's not a blog. It's perhaps the most primitive of the items I mentioned but probably the most useful and easiest to use. As such, the participants send an email message to the list and, as if by magic, the list processor sends a copy of the message to all of the list participants. It's as if each sender has a huge CC list in their mail program. We use an updated version of one of the oldest mail list programs available. It's called majordomo. There is a major issue with majordomo in today's world of constant change.

All messages sent to majordomo must be text, they can not be HTML. This is the most common problem people have trying to subscribe or unsubscribe. majordomo does not understand HTML.

If you have trouble subscribing or unsubscribing please send a message to the list owner by entering it in the text box at the bottom of this page.

majordomo has many commands and functions, but many of them have been disabled in an attempt to prevent spamming of the list participants. The following list of commands are the only ones that are enabled and useful to most list participants. The "end" in the examples can be omitted if you don't have a signature or your mailer does not add to the end of your message. If it is present, it must be on a different line than the command.

Also the tag "lowcarb-l" might be pronounced in English as "lowcarb dash ell". The trailing character is not a one.

How to subscribe to the list:

Send a text message to majordomo@solid.net

put the following in the body of the message

subscribe lowcarb-l
end

How to unsubscribe from the list:

Send a text message to majordomo@solid.net

put the following in the body of the message

unsubscribe lowcarb-l
end

How to get the info file for the list:

Send a text message to majordomo@solid.net

put the following in the body of the message

info lowcarb-l
end

Sometimes the list may not have any messages for days. Other times there may be twenty or more messages per day. Many people do not like to get a lot of messages per day. To accommodate them, the list has a digest version. It is only sent out when it reaches a certain length or a number of days have gone by.

To subscribe to the digest form, use the command above except replace lowcarb-l by lowcarb-l-digest.

Both versions of the list are what is called double opt-in lists. This means that the person responsible for an email address must actively agree that they want to be a participant. This is done in an attempt to stop bogus subscriptions and spammers. It is a simple process. First you send the message above. This causes majordomo to send a reply with validation information in it that you must send back exactly as requested or you will not be subscribed. Do not just reply to that message unless you manually remove any quoting characters your mail program might automaticly add to replies. We are not trying to be difficult, we are trying to stop automated responses without having to manually review each request and response.

Most people who have trouble unsubscribing send the message in HTML which majordomo does not understand. If they didn't do that, they sent the message to the list which does nothing because majordomo usually filters it or if majordomo allows it to pass through, they may get flamed. So please follow the instructions above.

Other questions about the list can be emailed to the email address you will discover by clicking here

The server that majordomo runs on uses some of the spam blacklists to inhibit spammers. If you are attempting to send mail to majordomo, the list, or the list owner and get back a message from either solid.net or your own mail server that says that your mail is being rejected, please describe your situation in the box below. If your request is to be unsubscribed, the list owner will unsubscribe you. If it is something else, he will attempt to figure out a way to accommodate you.

List Archives and FAQ

Majordomo automatically creates archives of all posts. These archives have always been public in some form. At various times that was only through special majordomo commands, other times it was that plus ftp access, web access, or both. The list archives are a wealth of information. However there is also a lot of the banter and silliness that often occurs on mail list.

The original archives starting in November 1996 were taken off line in March 1999. There were 65 megabytes of them and it was thought that there were many errors and much duplication. Much of the worth while archive information from that time period (and more) is contained in a much more readable form in Lyle McDonalds book about ketogenic diets. There are a number of places on the net to buy it or write him at lylemcd@onr.com to buy it directly from him. List price is $29.95 and it's a bargain at that price.

The archives between then and mid-July 2002 were taken off line when we changed servers. The feeling both then and in March 1999 was that most pertinent information would rapidly reappear and people would not have to download files that were many megabytes long. However, it has become apparent that some of that pertinent information is not reappearing and people are reinventing some things that were discovered to be wrong a number of years ago. To solve these issues plus the issues of people having to download huge files, not having a way to look at them once they were downloaded, and not being able to find particular items in them, the ability to do on-line searches of them was added in July of 2003.

To access the search engine click here.

When the search engine was brought on line a number of people complained that they did not want their email addresses on their old posts made that public. So some addresses in posts previous to 15-July-2003 have been modified at the request of the posters. I don't want to do that again. If you want to be anonymous, please subscribe from a hotmail, yahoo, juno, aol, etc account or ask the list owner for an account at solid.net.

To prevent spammers from harvesting email addresses from the list archives, the only current way to access them is via the search engine. Most spammers would find easier ways to get addresses than to use it.
